Welcome to the 2nd edition of Mary Monday! This is a time where I like to just sit down and be real with you guys.
Today, I wanted to talk to you about my photography journey. This is the short version 😉
I have always had a love for photography – I got it from my dad. My dad always had a camera with him, which is insane because this was before the ease of camera phones! I look through some of the photos he took in the 80s while vacationing with my mom and it is very clear he had a love and understanding of photography.
After he passed away, I took over the photography. If you look back on the photos I took on vacation you can clearly see me trying to be artistic (and you will be hard pressed to find a photo with me in the frame!).
My junior year of high school I enrolled in a dark room photography class. Thank goodness my mom supported me because it was one expensive class and obsession. Every minute I had free I would be in the dark room, which drove Vincent crazy! I don’t know if there are words to describe how magical it is to watch your images come to life under that red light! Below you will see some of my work from the dark room. Thankfully, I’ve gotten a lot better 😉
In 2008, after I graduated and got married, I needed a hobby! Vincent deployed and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. Thus Callan Tinsley Photography was born! My first photoshoot was of my sister and her then-boyfriend-now-husband. When I look back on those images I cringe. Oh boy. People paid me for this?!
So here I am, 7 years later. It hasn’t always been easy but I love what I do! I love meeting new people and I love watching families grow. My creative heart is full being a photographer.
And, one day I will have my dark room. Mark my words! I just have to get Vincent on board 😉
Always,
ML
